Haircuts & Dim Sum Lunch

Aloha Everyone,

We finally got a couple of replacement parts for Honu. The parts from Canada took 5 weeks. Perhaps I could have given them a gentle nudge after the first 2 weeks delay but then the person handling customer service sounded overwhelmed on the phone. So what’s 3 more weeks? Anyway, while waiting, the two of us went to California then to Utah.

J.J. and I got haircuts at the Supercuts salon located near the airport. We utilized the 40 minutes waiting period to walk to the adjacent shopping center where we found an excellent Asian supermarket. They had at least 10 varieties of Asian apples, pears and dragon fruits. And wonderful veggies which one do not normally see unless you go to Bristol Farm or some other specialty store. I bought several pears for J.J. and 10 small persimmons for me. The latter is perfect for individual servings!

Katie overseas as manager 3 Supercuts stylists. Friendly, high energy, full of life, J.J. and I were happy and grateful that she was the one who gave us our haircuts :-)

Dim Sum lunch at the appropriately named Hong Kong Restaurant was a very good choice. Servers pushing carts, all shouting in Cantonese, took us back to our favorite Dim Sum restaurants in Hong Kong.

Frank Gehry / Cleveland Clinic Lou Rufo Center for Brain Health

Aloha Everyone,

Returning to Las Vegas, SIRI took us via previously untraveled streets, referred to as “off-strip”. This turned out to be a worthwhile diversion as J.J. and I saw one of the most amazing buildings by the internationally renowned architect, Frank Gehry.

Cleveland Clinic Lou Rufo Center for Brain Health is located at 888 West Bonneville Avenue. This hospital treats brain disorders such as cognitive impairment, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson's, and Huntington's disease. Even if you are unfamiliar with Frank Gehry as an architect, your city might be home to one of his many masterpieces. Here is a link.

Dining In & Out In St. George

Aloha Everyone,

Between the two of us, I am particularly cautious about what I eat. However that does not deter us from being adventurous whenever we dine out.

In St. George, J.J. and I were able to enjoy a variety of international cuisine. From the top: Albóndigas Soup (Mexican Meatball Soup), Pad Thai (stir-fried rice noodle dish with shrimp, Pad See Ew (vegetarian Thai noodle with fried tofu), tofu Pho (Vietnamese soup) J.J.’s meat Pho was less photogenic  :-)

Then there are endless veggies and fruits on my vegetarian days while J.J. eats meat.

Temple View RV Resort

 Aloha Everyone,

Temple View RV Resort is home for Honu for our one-week stay at St. George. January, February, March and October are considered the Peak Season. However this year, we were told, the place is packed starting in November. St. George, mere 300 miles south-southwest of Salt Lake City, makes this place an attractive choice to winter.

The McArthur Family-owned RV Resort is located on 13.5 acres of family farm with a section still reserved for growing alfalfa. There are 136 mobile homes for owner-occupants. You must be 55 plus. Additional sites for 136 RV have no age restrictions.

The large activity room is a popular gathering place for quilters, chorus, electronics class, potluck dinner, bingo and jam session. I believe there is also an Aqua aerobics class every morning in the heated pool. 

J.J. and I met several seniors who stay 3 to 6 months a year and even year around.

It is a safe and friendly place and I enjoy my daily walk. By the second day, I was exchanging greetings with nearly two dozen fellow early risers.

Ashlyn is a college student studying American Sign Language. Cheerful and helpful, Ashlyn seems to enjoy her working in the office and interacting with seniors.

Día de Muerto (The Day of the Dead)

Día de Muerto is celebrated throughout Mexico. For this year, in the United States, this holiday began on Wednesday, 10/31 and ended on Friday 11/2. Families and friends gather to remember, honor and pray for those who have died.
