Aloha Everyone,
We purchased a 7-days entrance pass for $25. This allowed us to visit one of the few places in the world where one can see wildlife in their natural habitat. The park is 71,000 acres that includes trails, campgrounds and roads. Wildlife Loop Road is where one can frequently see Tatanka, pronghorn, burros and prairie dogs.
Herds of Tatanka were congregated in several places but when a huge bull decided to cross the road right in front of our car, it was a great photo opportunity.
Buffalo Roundup is on Friday, September 26, 2025. State employees and volunteers will corral 1,450 Buffalo over the ridge, down the hill. One year ago, J.J. and I were staying in one of the two campsites in Honu. We heard the thunder and felt the ground shake like earthquake. It was unforgettable experience. They were gathering the herd for the annual roundup. Only 1,450 bison are permitted based on the amount of grass available to sustain them. The excess are sold through auction.
Last year, they had more than 25,000 spectators for the roundup. Park access is free, but parking is limited.
Aloha -- Cathi
