Officially called fatality mark. The site of every auto accident fatality is marked by South Dakota’s DMV. This program started in 1979. These signs are plentiful especially when driving on windy mountain roads. If the victim’s family objects, these signs are not placed.I saw one within an easy walking distance of our Microtel Inn & Suites by Windham, Rapid City.
Badlands is a National Park in South Dakota. Scenic drive in winding mountain road trying to spot wildlife wasn’t easy. There is more than one version of how Badlands were named. The French trappers who explored the west in the early 1800s called the area a “bad land to cross”. The Dakota Sioux Indians labeled it “makosica,” meaning “land bad.”
Due to difficult terrains where there are many places where criminals can hide, some say “Badlands” is where lawless criminals hid.
