Machine Learning

Aloha Everyone,
During our stay in La Jolla, J.J. and I heard a presentation on Machine Learning. Machines learning is artificial intelligence. It allows computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed.
There are three types of problems which machine learning solves:
1) Classification: Example of this is medical biopsy slides. Is it benign or malignant? The task is repetitive and machines don’t tire.
2) Regression: does it fit a pattern and can you make future predictions?
3). Unsupervised or in some case, semi-supervised. Machine learning is employed in a range of computing tasks.
J.J. and I notice that our daily news is filtered based on which stories we have read in the past. I also receive music recommendations based on the history of music played previously on my phone. J.J. asked for a recipe on preparing leg of lamb. For 7 days he kept receiving messages about nearby restaurants that serves lamb dishes.
Whether voluntarily or involuntarily, machine learning is far reaching and changing our day-to-day life.
Aloha -- Cathi
