Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve Hike

Aloha Everyone,

I decided to join a hike during our stay in La Jolla. My right ankle was accidentally twisted 3 days ago. It is healing well, but J.J. decided to wrap it up with sports tape to make sure the hike won’t exacerbate the sprain.

Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve is one of the largest urban parks in the United States encompassing about 4,000 acres. The park is approximately 7 miles long and our son estimated that it would take us about 3 hours to cover the 7.5 mile trail.

This was my second time to hike the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve. It was a good choice because the terrain is flat. We left home at 8:30 am to enjoy the cool and crisp morning air. Clear sightings of Pileated woodpeckers with their distinctive red head, as depicted in the Woody Woodpecker comics, were exceptional.

A quick rest at the waterfall before we headed back. I am happy to note that I ended the day with 18,968 steps or 8.8 miles total.

Aloha -- Cathi
