Belize is located on the eastern coast of Central America.
J.J. and I hired Alice, a private licensed guide with 23 years of experience who gave us a city tour. Alice has a wealth of information about Belize. Here are some facts she shared that I can recall:
1). Belize is the only English speaking country in Central America.
2). Belize has the second largest barrier reef in the world. 200 plus offshore keys are also rich with marine life.
3). The population of Belize is 361,000.
4). There are 4 main ethnic groups that make up the country.
5). Main industry is tourism.
6). Public education is mandatory for 5-14 years olds.
7). Dominant religion is Catholicism.
8). Belize is the only country is Central America where the government prides itself that the city water is potable.
9) 2% of the population is Mennonite both from Germany and Pennsylvania. The Mennonites own farms and provide fresh meat, milk, ice cream and poultry.
10). Independent Belize is part of the British Commonwealth and government buildings from the colonial era are still in use.
