Medieval Gates, Walls and Moats

Aloha Everyone,

There are six main gates plus a number of other gates where one can enter and exit.

My favorite gate is the double tower guarding Amboise Gate. When you walk through a gate, you are on a paved path over the exterior moat. From there, you follow the curvature of the road which leads you through the second gate and the inner moat. This is an enchanting passage which J.J. and I never get tired of. After entering the  Ambrose Gate, we can see the backside of the Palace of the Grand Master protected by another moat. This might have been a later construction to prevent any intruders from climbing the walls of the palace when it was being used by the Grand Master.

Kolona Gate, one of the most photographed, is located across the harbor. Solid and massive, once you walk in, you are right inside the Medieval City. Here the excitement and the drama is viewing the gate from the exterior.
