In Naxos driftwood is found on beaches around the island. Many are small fragments such as branches but occasionally entire remains of trees can be found.
Driftwood artists polish the wood and coat them with clear varnish to create functional or decorative pieces.
From our hotel window, J.J. and I can watch one that is fashioned to hang 5 little wooden sailboats. When it’s windy, these sailboats twirl around wildly making us wonder if the ropes are sturdy enough.
One of the seafood restaurants makes both functional and creative use of driftwood including as space dividers, sunshades and decorative art forms.
